Frequently Asked Questions
Common questions about counselling, the process, and what to expect.
Getting Started
How do I book my first session?
You can contact me via phone, email, or the contact form on this website. We'll arrange a convenient time for an initial consultation where we can discuss your needs and answer any questions you may have.
What happens in the first session?
The first session is an opportunity for us to get to know each other. We'll discuss what brings you to therapy, your goals, and how I might be able to help. It's also a chance for you to ask questions and see if we're a good fit to work together. There's no pressure to commit after the first session.
How long does each session last?
Each session typically lasts 50 minutes. This provides enough time to explore issues in depth while maintaining a focused, productive session.
Is the first consultation free?
The 15min initial consultation is at no cost to you, thereafter sessions are charged for.
Sessions & Process
How often will we meet?
Most clients find that weekly sessions work well, providing continuity and momentum in therapy. However, the frequency is flexible and can be adjusted based on your needs, availability, and goals. Some clients prefer fortnightly sessions, especially as they progress in therapy.
How many sessions will I need?
This varies greatly depending on individual circumstances and goals. Some people find short-term therapy (6-12 sessions) helpful for specific issues, while others benefit from longer-term support. We'll regularly review your progress together and you can decide what feels right for you.
Can I do therapy online?
Yes, I offer both in-person and online sessions. Online therapy via secure video call can be just as effective as face-to-face sessions and offers flexibility for those with busy schedules, mobility issues, or who live further away.
What if I need to cancel or reschedule?
Life happens, and I understand that sometimes you need to reschedule. Please provide as much notice as possible, ideally 48 hours. This allows me to offer the time slot to another client. We can discuss the cancellation policy during our first session.
Confidentiality & Safety
Is everything I say confidential?
Yes, everything discussed in our sessions is strictly confidential. I'm bound by professional ethical guidelines and won't share information without your consent. The only exceptions are if there's a serious risk of harm to yourself or others, or if required by law.
Will you tell my GP or family what we discuss?
No, not without your explicit written consent. You're in control of who knows you're in therapy and what information is shared. If you'd like me to communicate with your GP or other healthcare providers, we can discuss this and you'll need to provide written permission.
What if I see you outside of sessions?
If we happen to meet outside of sessions, I won't approach you or acknowledge our therapeutic relationship unless you initiate contact first. This protects your privacy and maintains appropriate boundaries.
Practical Information
Where are you located?
I'm based in Cork City centre, in McHugh House Counselling Rooms. The location is easily accessible by public transport and has parking nearby.
What are your fees?
The current fee is €70 p/session, but I also offer a limited number of slots for low-cost clients for those in need.
What payment methods do you accept?
Cash, card or bank transfer is available.
About Counselling
What's the difference between counselling and psychotherapy?
While the terms are often used interchangeably, counselling typically focuses on specific issues or life challenges, while psychotherapy may involve deeper, longer-term exploration. In practice, I use an integrative approach tailored to your individual needs, regardless of the label.
What is humanistic integrative therapy?
I use a humanistic integrative approach, drawing from different therapeutic models to create a practice that's tailored to you. At the heart of this approach is the belief that everyone is capable of growth and that you are the expert in your own life. Together, we'll create a safe, non-judgmental space where you can explore your thoughts and feelings at your own pace. My role isn't to give advice, but to help you discover your own insights and solutions.
What if I don't know what to talk about?
That's completely normal and okay. Some sessions you might have lots to discuss, other times you might feel stuck. I'm here to help guide the conversation and create a space where whatever needs to emerge can do so naturally. There's no pressure to have a prepared agenda.
Common Concerns
I'm not sure if counselling is right for me
This is a common feeling. Many people benefit from talking to someone independent and trained to support mental wellbeing. If you're considering it, I'd encourage you to reach out for an initial conversation - there's no obligation to continue if it doesn't feel right.
What if I get emotional during sessions?
Emotions are a natural and welcome part of therapy. It's okay to cry, feel angry, or express any emotion. The therapy room is a safe space for all feelings, and I'm here to support you through whatever comes up.
I'm worried about being judged
Creating a non-judgmental, accepting environment is fundamental to my work. Whatever you're experiencing or have been through, I'm here to support you, not judge you. You can share at your own pace and only what feels comfortable.
What if therapy doesn't work for me?
Therapy works differently for everyone, and it's important that you feel comfortable with both the process and the therapist. If you feel we're not the right fit, that's okay and I can help you find alternative support if needed. Your wellbeing is what matters most.
